what is night☾ school?
night☾ school is a free artists support programme based on postgraduate pedagogy spread over 6 fortnightly in-person sessions
what is postgraduate pedagogy?
postgraduate pedagogy pedagogy means subjects taught after a degree, so it's a little more focused and critical in its approach
do I need a degree?
no, we recognise and champion non-formal education, but we would like you to have a level of critical creative practice
what might a creative critical practice look like?
it is a process where the making of work and the thinking about that work happen simultaneously, with each informing and shaping the other. it often challenges conventional academic or artistic boundaries, blurring the lines between art and criticism
what kind of practitioners are you looking for?
anyone with a critical openness to experimentation
who has attended night☾ school?
a broad range. we have had: people without a degree, practising artists, archaeologists, university lecturers, PhD students, doctors, activists, curators
where do people come from?
we have people from across the Morecambe Bay area, and as far at Glasgow, Newcastle, Todmorden, Clithero, and Carlisle
how many places are there?
we aim for 10 per programme [but often stretch to 12]
how competitive are places?
it depends, there have been sessions where we’ve only just gotten a cohort, and others where we’ve been significantly over subscribed
how do you choose places?
we shortlist based on the application, then prioritise people that can attend every session, then curate a cohort based on needs, benefit, diversity, and group cohesion
what do we do in sessions?
the sessions alternate: 3 info and 3 share sessions. info sessions are taught/engaged sessions, with lectures/workshops/discussions/activities/… ending in a prompt. share sessions are responses to the prompts made by you, in these sessions we collective feedback to fellow peers. you will need to make and share 3 outcomes over 3 months
what are the sessions like?
sessions are usually fun and active, but we are discussing contemporary issues that can be difficult. each 3hr session has two tea breaks and we invite the cohort to set ground rules at the start of each programme
